Magnum member and acclaimed photojournalist Luc was the first photographer I saw online who really spoke to me as a photographer. I found his work very moving and intelligent. You could feel the image as much as see it. His book 'Winterreise' is still one of my favourite books of photo essays.
Possibly the first ever photo I remember is his 'Shell shocked US Marine'. I remember looking at it on the bookshelf in the library and imagining what that poor man was going through. Later I got to know more about the man who took the image. I urge you to do the same.
My all time favourite fine art portrait photographer. I have had the great pleasure to go to her exhibitions, see her speak and even once upon a time interview her about her work. I urge anyone who has not already to seek out her work. It has a wonderful otherworldly quality about it quite unlike anyone else I have seen.
Joel is a street photography legend. Perversely this made me resist his work for some time. I have no idea why in retrospect. Later I encountered his masters of photography book and courses and loved his directness, generosity with information on his thinking and methodology on his photography process. His words on 'how' he worked resonated with me as deeply as 'what' he worked on and influenced my own approach to photography very significantly.
A new influence for me. I stumbled across his book ''The Mountain Men' in a shop in Gronigen, NL. It's a multi-year project photographing remote mountain people in the USA. His images remind me of paintings by the old masters due to his use of light and colour. I love that he's self taught and accomplished such a wonderful standard of work.
